This tropical kiwi mango smoothie is loaded with frozen mango, fresh kiwis, and fresh kale. It is refreshing, sweet, tangy, and only requires three simple ingredients.

Frozen mango makes the smoothie sweet and creamy while the kiwi adds pops of a bright tangy flavor. We add fresh kale to the smoothie as an easy way to get more greens into our diet.

Ingredient notes and substitutions
The mango kiwi smoothie uses just three simple ingredients but please see the recipe card below for the exact measurements.
Frozen mango - You can use fresh or frozen mango, but I find that frozen mango makes the smoothie thicker and chills the smoothie. You may want to use ice or freeze the fresh ripe mango to have a chilled smoothie. Frozen mango is already ripe and prepped.
If you use fresh mango, the smoothie will be thinner, so adjust the water needed in the recipe to get your desired consistency. For leftover frozen mango, try overnight oats with mango, mango oatmeal, or a tofu buddha bowl with mango and peanut sauce.
Kiwi fruit - The kiwi skin is edible, so you can trim off the ends and add the whole thing to the blender without peeling it. I didn’t notice a difference in flavor for the skin being on or off. It can be peeled if you prefer. Unripe kiwis can have a sour taste, and ripe kiwis can have a sweet tangy flavor.
Kale - Remove the kale stem and tear the leaves into bite-size pieces. Fresh spinach can also be used. For more dairy-free smoothies with kale, try a beet and kale smoothie or an island green smoothie.
Tips
- If you use fresh mango instead of frozen, the smoothie may be thinner. Adjust the water suggested in the recipe card.
- If you skip the kale to have a fruit smoothie, adjust the water in the recipe card. The kale does help mellow out the flavor, so the smoothie will probably have a stronger tangy kiwi flavor.
- High-powdered blenders work great for blending frozen fruit. If you don’t have a high powdered blender, make sure it can blend frozen fruit. For non-high-speed blenders, add the kale and water and blend, then add the kiwi and frozen mango.
How to make a mango kiwi smoothie
Peel or don’t peel the kiwis, but I trim off the stem end of the kiwi before adding it to the smoothie. Add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.
Pour into a glass and enjoy!
Variations
Enjoy the mango and kiwi smoothie recipe as it is or try a variation. Smoothies are easy to customize to suit your personal preference.
- Add ½ inch of freshly grated ginger for a spicy kick.
- Blend in whole chia seeds or flax seeds.
- Substitute half of the mango with frozen pineapple.
- Substitute half of the mango with frozen strawberries.
- Use coconut water instead of plain water.
- Make a smoothie bowl by reducing the water. Start with less water, then add in more until you get a thick smoothie bowl consistency. Then, top the bowl with chia seeds, fresh fruit, and oil-free granola.
Serving suggestions
Smoothies tend to be delicious but not very filling. I use them as an afternoon snack and not as a main meal. To enjoy this smoothie as a meal try pairing it with vegan avocado toast, vegan toast, dairy-free overnight oats, or plant-based granola.
Storage
Refrigerator: The kiwi smoothie recipe is best served immediately, but leftovers can be covered and stored in the refrigerator. Consume within 24 hours. If there is liquid separation, just stir it back in.
Freeze: Leftover smoothies can also be frozen in ice cube trays. Add them to flavor a new smoothie later.
Frequently asked questions
If you’re new to adding greens to your smoothie and unsure if you’d like it, start with spinach. It has a milder taste than kale and it’s easier to cover up with fruit. You can also try adding half the amount of greens, then slowly increasing the amount as you get used to them.
Add more water to thin it out.
Add a banana, more frozen mango, or more kale until the smoothie is thick enough. Another option is to blend in whole chia seeds.
