    Vegan Toast (32 Sweet and Savory Ideas)

    Vegan toast ideas for breakfast, lunch, or a quick easy dinner.  The topping ideas can be endless, but I’ve compiled a few ideas and combinations to get you started. If you need more ideas I have a post for vegan avocado toast for different ways to top your avocado toast.

    Start with your favorite bread, bagel, or even an English muffin.  I’m loving sourdough lately and cinnamon raisin bread would be pretty yummy for those sweet toast topping ideas.  Mix and match from the base or spread ideas, vegan toast toppings, and garnish ideas or pick out a sweet or savory combination idea from the list below.

    Tips

    • Start by toasting your favorite bread until golden brown.
    • No need to measure ingredients just add as much or as little as you want to your toast.
    • Then pick out a spread or base idea for your toast, top it with a topping idea, then pick out a garnish from the list below.

    Build your own spreads or base ideas

    • Nut or seed butter: peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, vegan hazelnut spread, sunflower butter
    • Mashed banana (mash up a ripe banana and use it as a base, then top with toppings)
    • Chocolate peanut butter spread (mix cocoa powder with peanut butter and add maple syrup to sweeten.  If it needs thinning out use dairy-free milk)
    • Vegan chocolate sauce (add less milk to keep the sauce thicker to use as a spread)
    • Hummus
    • Tahini
    • Vegan cream cheese
    • Avocado 
    • Pesto
    • Tofu scramble 
    • Mashed white beans
    • Vegan oil-free refried beans
    • Jam
    • Date paste
    • Tomato sauce

    Toast toppings ideas

    • Sliced fruit or berries
    • Sliced veggies raw or roasted
    • Cooked mushrooms
    • Sliced avocado
    • Oil-free marinated tofu
    • Chickpea tuna salad (no mayo) or vegan curry chickpea salad
    • Tofu scramble
    • Tempeh bacon 
    • Roasted chickpeas
    • White beans or any type of cooked bean
    • Sundried tomatoes

    Garnish ideas

    Sweet

    • Ground cinnamon
    • Maple syrup
    • Sugar
    • Pumpkin or apple pie spice
    • Balsamic glaze (or make your own by cooking down balsamic vinegar until it reduces and becomes thick)
    • Cacao nibs or vegan chocolate chips
    • Raisins or diced dried fruit
    • Toasted coconut flakes
    • Toasted slivered almonds
    • Lemon or lime zest
    • Oil-free granola
    • Drizzle of melted coconut butter
    • Pomegranate seeds
    • Chopped mint leaves

    Savory

    • Chopped nuts or seeds (pumpkin or sunflower)
    • Balsamic glaze (or make your own by cooking down balsamic vinegar until it reduces and becomes thick)
    • Nutritional yeast
    • cashew parmesan
    • Crushed red pepper
    • Coarse sea salt
    • Salsa
    • Fresh herbs: basil, cilantro, parsley, chives, dill
    • Seasonings: smoked paprika, Everything bagel seasoning, or another seasoning blend
    • Sesame seeds
    • Lemon or lime zest
    • Small greens like baby spinach, arugula, or sprouts
    • Coconut bacon
    • Sliced olives
    • Pickled ginger, banana peppers, or jalapeños

    Toast recipe suggestions

    Here’s a list of sweet toast ideas to try:

    1. Nut or seed butter, banana slices, cinnamon.
    2. Nut or seed butter, apple slices, topped with granola, melted chocolate, or ground cinnamon.
    3. Almond, peanut, or hazelnut butter, sliced strawberry, and chocolate sauce.
    4. Almond butter, blueberries, and cinnamon.
    5. Plain vegan cream cheese (sweetened with maple syrup if you prefer), blueberries, and lemon zest.
    6. Vegan chocolate sauce with sliced strawberries or bananas, and toasted coconut flakes.
    7. Almond butter with pumpkin spice.
    8. Date paste with vanilla mixed in or pumpkin spice sprinkled on top.
    9. Plain vegan cream cheese (sweeten with maple syrup if needed), sliced peaches, and ground cinnamon.
    10. Mashed ripe banana with cinnamon.
    11. Mashed ripe banana, with berries and toasted slivered almonds.
    12. Nut or seed butter with fruit preserves.
    13. Cashew butter with pomegranate seeds.

    Here’s a list of savory toast ideas to try:

    1. Roasted red pepper hummus, cucumber, arugula, and pickled banana peppers.
    2. Hummus or vegan pesto, sliced cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, and balsamic vinegar.
    3. Toast with spicy tofu scramble or hatch green chile tofu scramble (skip the potatoes in the recipe).
    4. This vegan avocado toast post has even more ideas.
    5. Top with baked beans.
    6. Avocado with salsa.
    7. Hummus, sliced tomatoes, and a sprinkle of sea salt or olives.
    8. Vegan refried beans and salsa or diced tomatoes.
    9. Hummus, avocado slices and/or sliced tomatoes, and coconut bacon.
    10. Garlic hummus with Everything Bagel seasoning.
    11. Roasted Red Pepper hummus with caramelized onions.
    12. Hummus with avocado slices, sprouts, and crushed red pepper.
    13. Hummus and sautéed mushrooms cooked with thyme, garlic, and salt.
    14. Hummus with white beans or chickpeas then topped with (vegan parmesan) or nutritional yeast.
    15. Hummus with roasted veggies and sliced olives.
    16. Unsweetened vegan cream cheese with sliced cucumbers and chives or dill.
    17. Marinara sauce with roasted vegetables and nutritional yeast or plant-based parmesan (this works well for English muffins for mini pizzas).
    18. Pesto with roasted tomatoes and plant-based parmesan.
    19. Open-face sandwich with chickpea tuna salad or curry chickpea salad. 

    Serving suggestions

    The vegan toast can be served by itself as a filling meal or it can be paired with a side to round out the meal.  For sweet toast ideas, pair them with a side of fruit or a smoothie.  For savory toast ideas, pair them with raw or roasted vegetables, a simple side salad, tofu scramble, or roasted potatoes.

    • Cream cheese
    • Sliced cucumber
    • Chives or dill

    • Sliced strawberries
    • Drizzle of vegan chocolate sauce

    Avocado, Pickled Red Onion Toast

    • Mashed avocado
    • Pickled red onion
    • Chopped fresh cilantro

    Banana Cinnamon Toast

    • Mashed banana
    • Sprinkle of cinnamon

    Hummus and Pickled Banana Pepper Toast

    • Roasted red pepper hummus
    • Sliced cucumber
    • Arugula
    • Pickled banana pepper

    Instructions

    1. Toast your bread of choice.
    2. Slather with your spread or base layer.
    3. Add toppings.
    4. Then sprinkle on any garnishes.
    5. Best if served immediately.
